310 Class
I have enjoyed my 310 class. It is much different than what I expected in a course. However, it was a pleasant surprise. I have learned many things in this class, such as how to build a website, word processing hints and spreadsheets, how to set up a blog, which I intend to use in the future as a teacher to communicate with my students and student's parents. I have also learned about some neat FREE tools that are available for resources as a teacher and a student. These tools are Google Docs, iTunes, Picasa, just to name a few. All in all this has been a very informative class.

The Stanford Challenge
According to the video there are two different mindsets Growth and Fixed. The Fixed mindset is of one who doesn't believe in themselves to reach goals and the Growth mindset according to the video is of one who can do anything they set their mind to.
As an educator it is my responsibility to do all that I can to affirm students and encourage them that they CAN and focus on the positives. An educators job goes beyond teaching, and educators responsibility is to encourage students to reach as high as they can in terms of attaining their goals and setting them high.

ITunes In Teaching
Itunes has a vast supply of topics and links for teachers to take advantage of in the classroom or on the web for students. It is so simple to operate, I would definitely use these options to teach different topics to even first graders. It is very informative and interesting information that iTunes has made available to educators.
This will definitely be a part of my resources as an educator in the future. I have been very impressed with what I have learned about iTunes.

Wikopedia
One comment about using wikopedia would be to definitely warn against using Wikopedia for a report especially if you are looking for factual information. I would definitely not use Wikopedia unless there was some change in the way access is allowed or these companies and parties are allowed to change information regarding anything available in Wikopedia. Hats off to the man, Mr. Grifith who has discovered a way to track changes to IP addresses. Something should definitely be done to stop false statements in Wikopedia. So glad to have the heads up, I will pass this information along to colleagues.

iTunes University
http://images.apple.com/support/itunes_u/docs/iTunes_Create_U_Guide.pdf
iTunes University is a valuable resource made available to educators and education organizations. Makes it easier to download, search and play educational material, shows, etc. Possibilities are endless here, including autimated lecture capturing, audio with slides or images. Teaching will be a totally different way with all we have available at our fingertips.

Using iPods In Instruction
The iPod allows portable access for students as well as recording capability, such as recording interviews, songs, lectures, etc. The iPod can also be an effective tool used to support students with study having the capability of repeated listening as well as storage and file transfer capablities. Students at Duke University have the opportunity now to take advantage of all that the iPod has to offer through the school. This tool will be very effective for classroom use in any setting.

Comments about the 180 days? From the Fiscbowl
What a conversation starter! I chose to comment from the Fischbowl about the 180 days of school Post. I do believe children spend a lot of time in school when it is sometimes unnecessary. My son who is in kindergarten starts his day at school when the bell rings and school takes in at 7:30 a.m. and school lets out at 2:45 p.m. and by the time I wait in the line to pick him up we leave the school at 2:55 p.m. I was just telling someone that my son is five and he almost has the schedule of a shift worker, 7 to 3. There is also one half hour in his day where there is nap time.
So there is the issue with how the hours in the day are used and the days of the school year. I definitely feel there should be a way to modify the schedules in school K-12 where at least the days would be shortened for them. Time management is definitely an issue and always has been. Doing something the same way just because it has been that way doesn't mean it is what is best.

Comments About Karl Fisch September Blog
I read the September 2007 Blog by Karl Fisch and was amazed that so many teachers are so technolgically illiterate. I have always been told that your not a leader unless someone is following. How can one teach effectively and be a leader in today's technoligically advanced society if they can not even operate a computer? I realize there are ways around it, however this doesn't mean that its what is best.
I have children that are two and five years of age who already know how to play games on the computer, etc. There is something wrong with the picture when a five year old knows more about a computer than a teacher. My opinion is that if you choose to go into the teaching field it is an everlearning career. As teachers, we should want to advance in personal knowledge, not only for ourselves but for the future of the generation that is coming up.

School Blogs From Other Countries

I found this school blog, originating from Thailand. The web address is http://www.schoolvideoblogs.com/prathom-6-1/student-video-blog-61-01.html
This is a very informative blog which even goes so far as to show video clips from daily school routines such as PE class, snack time, lessons, band, and you name it. The Blog even has student's blog with videos introducing the students and what they have learned. This blog was very impressive to me. I have included one picture of some boys from the school above my post.
I also found another interesting blog uniting Scotland and Finland schools, found at http://healthypassportp5.blogspot.com/ It is entitled, "A Healthy Passport P5" A project linking Yester Primary School, in Scotland, with Kuvansin koulu Primary School, in Finland. How interesting for two schools to link through blogging and interacting and communicating one to another.
These two blogs give great ideas for adding videos throughout the days of school so parents can see first hand how things are ordered. Also the concept of communicating with another body of students from a totally different country. How interesting that would be for students and teachers alike. These are definitely ideas I will put to use in my classroom in the future.

Examples Of Teacher/Class Blogs

see hereI searched for teacher blogs or class blogs and found a number of them from all over. I found one that I was very impressed with at the following address http://borderland.northernattitude.org/ This teacher, Mr. Doug is so very organized and has posted almost daily concerning what took place not only in the classroom but even teacher conferences. His blog was also nominated as a finalist for the 2006 teacher blog of the year. Using a blog seems so professional to me. It is a way for the parent, student, and teacher to be aware of studies and what takes place in the classroom.
The second most exciting blog I found was for this kindergarten class. http://www.otsd.org/Teachers/OTES/Blogs/Bergeron/bergeron.html
My own son is in kindergarten and how exciting it would be for him and even myself to get to see pictures posted and keep up with things that are coming up. This could take the place of letters that are so hard to keep up with especially for a young man in kindergarten.A sample picture is posted above. These class and teacher blogs are so cool, I can't believe there aren't more teachers using them in our area.
I will definitely use this sort of technology for my classroom, whether I end up teaching kindergarten or third grade. The possibilities are almost endless.

ACCESS
Alabama Connecting Classroom, Educators, and Students Statewide, ACCESS, is an option for distance learning initiated for high school students. The goals are to provide access to advanced courses, placement, distance learning and much more.
State funding has been passed to have twelve high schools connected with ACCESS, a federal grant has also been passed for an additional twelve high schools in Alabama. ACCESS will be an asset to students and give them an advance in career opportunities and their futures.

Using ALEX
I am going to school to get my degree in Education to become a teacher. However, I am already a teacher to my two small children. One being five-years and another at the age of two, I explored the things ALEX has to offer. I actually tried ALEX out tonight on my Five-year old using the Book reading video. He really enjoyed watching this video online.
I will definitely use ALEX as a resource in my classroom. I will most likely use ALEX to create lesson plans, to find other resources and much more. With these web enhanced resources we can take our class somewhere classes have never been able to go in the past. What an exciting time to teach.

ALEX
ALEX is a web enhanced site for teachers. ALEX offers tools for teachers such as leson plans, informative links, and many other resources. It also can be used for students and parents to have a connective to teachers.
With ALEX available possibilities are almost endless. It is very comforting to know that ALEX will be available as a resource for my future teaching profession.

Week 1
Check out this movie we were asked to watch for a conversation piece today. It is found at
www.thefischbowl .blogspot.com/2007/06/did-you-know-20.html .
This short movie has made me want to get involved and find out more about what kind of technology is being offered and made available at the school where my very own son attends. So many of the schools in our communities are far behind when it comes to technology. It is heart wrenching to know that the children in other countries are thriving and our children in America have been so slack. I desire to read statistics that say the children of the entire world are thriving in the educational realm with the college graduate level much higher here in the U.S. Being a mother of two children, with one already in the school system, I plan to become more involved in encouraging the school, school board, and senate to be certain to make available every source possible for our children to attain the best education they can get. Finally, when I do become a teacher, I will also do my best to make a difference in this area as well.
